MUSALIA MUDAVADI
HAVING LOST HIS PARLIAMENTARY BID IN THE WAVE THAT OUSTED KANU HE HAS SMARTENED AND IS A FORCE IN THE ODMK.
Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi is the son of Moses Mudavadi and was the last and shortest serving Vice-President of Kenya under Daniel Arap Moi's regime. He was appointed in an attempt, that would end in failure, to bring the Luhya tribe into the KANU camp, which had been the party of government since independence.
Mudavadi ran for Vice-President as Uhuru Kenyatta's running mate in the 2002 elections. Despite the support of the outgoing President Moi, the KANU political machine and the provincial administration, the Kenyatta/Mudavadi ticket was roundly beaten and Mudavadi lost his Sabatia parliamentary seat.
More recently Mudavadi has been making a political comeback by aligning himself with the 'No' side in the forthcoming Referendum on the proposed new Constitution. This aligns him clearly with Raila Odinga's LDP and he could become the leading Luhya politician, should Odinga and allies win the next presidential elecion in 2007.
The Orange Democratic Movement-Kenya Party has made waves all over the country. Mudavadi was anointed an Elder of the Luhya community on 23 September 2006 and is considered a very likely compromise candidate of the party.
